RCMP urging drivers to be mindful of speed, signage heading into the new school year

In just a couple weeks, schools will open their doors to students, school zones will once again be active around Grande Prairie.

Grande Prairie RCMP Corporal Patrick McPhee says while it is a conversation that is had every year when the summer starts to wind down, it is an important one to have. He says safety is the top priority as students head back to hit the books.

“With school zones starting to kick up here right away, that will mean reducing speed, but also being mindful that our kids will be out on their bikes or walking, crossing streets,” McPhee says. “It’s just paying a little extra attention, everyone has somewhere they need to go, and it is about getting there safe.”

McPhee adds school zones clearly marked with signs that tell drivers to reduce their speed to 30 kilometres an hour and are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday whenever school is in session. Drivers caught exceeding the posted speed limit could face stiffer fines and loss of demerits on their license.

With most schools across the region starting on September 5th, McPhee urges drivers to “slow down, pay attention for signs, and watch out for kids.”
