Limited hotel rooms available for NWT fire evacuees

The upcoming Bear Creek Folk Festival is resulting in the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership finding a shortage of available hotel rooms for Northwest Territories wildfire evacuees.

Evacuees are encouraged to register at the St. Albert Servus Credit Union Place.

“Given the limited availability of accommodation space in Grande Prairie, registering at the St. Albert Servus Credit Union Place will help ensure that evacuees receive the necessary assistance in securing a safe and suitable place to stay.”

St. Albert Servus Credit Union Place is the designated registration center for evacuees at 400 Campbell Road.

As of Monday morning, GPREP officials reported 180 people had registered at the church and were put up in hotels in the city.

On Sunday, Fort Smith residents were the first to receive an evacuation order, followed by Hay River, along with the communities of Enterprise and K’Atl’odeeche.

More information can be found on the GPREP website.
