UPDATE: One lane re-opening on Highway 43 through Whitecourt

UPDATE: The fire caused by a collision between a fuel tanker and train has been extinguished. According to RCMP, crews will soon be clearing the scene as CN remains on site, assisted by LEDCOR for traffic, to repair the damage to the train rails. Drivers are being warned that traffic will be heavy in the area as only one lane will reopen on Highway 43 until the repairs are done.

Highway 43 is closed going both directions through Whitecourt after a fuel truck and train collided.

According to RCMP, officers and Alberta Sheriffs have contained the site near the Highway 32 junction.

“EMS, Whitecourt Fire Department and CN police are also on scene, and no fatalities have been reported. RCMP anticipates being on the scene for most of the day while emergency crews respond and police investigate. ”

Officials ask the public to avoid the area because “fuel is volatile and explosions are still possible.”
