A recent Peace Wapiti Academy Graduate made his Calgary Stampede debut Friday. Weston Sutherland outrode for his dad, veteran driver Mitch Sutherland, on the first night of the 2023 races in Calgary.
The second-year outrider says the anticipation leading up to his first Cowboys Rangeland Derby race was a little stressful.
“Waiting for the wagons to come in, it felt like my first ride ever again,” he says.
Along with Sutherland, Tyler DeSutter of Grande Prairie also made his first Rangeland Derby appearance. Outside of the outriders, the Peace Country is being represented by several Chuckwagon drivers in Calgary and at the North American Chuckwagon Championship in Lloydminster, two of the biggest shows in the sport.
At the end of night three in Calgary, Chanse Vigen is sitting first in the aggregate standings, with Mitch Sutherland in 15th and Kirk Sutherland in 20th. Over in Lloydminster, Todd McCracken finished day three in 13th, Dean Dreger in 14th, and Tuff Dreger in 16th.
