The Grande Prairie RCMP General Investigations Unit and Criminal Intelligence Service Alberta are running a project aimed to protect and decrease theft at metal facilities in the Grande Prairie area. The Scrap Metal Dealers and Recyclers Act gives responsibilities and guidelines to these establishments when they purchase or receive scrap metal. The program also allows law enforcement to check on if these establishments are following these guidelines, and will be fined for any non-compliance.
If these businesses or individuals are found guilty of not following the Scrap Metal Dealers and Recyclers act they will be fined $10,000 the first time, face one year in jail or both. While those who are found guilty twice or more will face a $25,000 fine or jail time.
H&W Salvage out of Grande Prairie has been charged with failing to comply with the Scrap Metal Act. The company could be facing a $50,000 fine for the first offence and a $200,000 fine for every subsequent offence.
RCMP asks those who have any information about metal theft, or any illegal activity to call the Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5701 or to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
