2015 could be big year for forest tent caterpillars

You may have already noticed: forest tent caterpillars are back in Grande Prairie.

The Dunvegan area near Peace River has had outbreaks every year since 2012, reaching as far south as the Saddle Hills – Woking area last year. At that rate, we could see the moths in Grande Prairie this year or next.

The City is asking residents to inspect their trees for the pests, as they can cause noticeable defoliation if left untreated. You should be looking for clusters of the blue-back banded caterpillars, and destroy whatever you find. They can be knocked out of hard to reach spots with a jet stream of water.

City-owned trees are already being inspected.
