Wildfire hazard very high in Grande Prairie region

The wildfire hazard in the Grande Prairie region has been upped to Very High. Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke says that gusty winds, combined with crossover conditions, mean that a fire started now could spread quickly and be difficult to control.

A fire advisory was issued to the County of Grande Prairie Monday, and now one is in effect for the whole Grande Prairie Wildfire Management Area. Permits will only be issued for burn barrels, smudges, and smoke houses. Campfires are still allowed, but could be restricted if conditions get worse.

So far this season there have been 14 wildfires in the region burning 68 hectares of land.
