Final days for Picasso, Chagall exhibition at art gallery

There are only a few days left to see the works of world-renowned artists Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall in Grande Prairie. The Passion Projects exhibit has been on display at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie since the end of September 2021 and will be taken down after January 9, 2022.

So far, thousands of people have made their way through the gallery to see the collection of prints, sculptures, and stories. Executive Director Jeff Erbach says it will be tough to have to say goodbye.

“We are already misty-eyed, not looking forward to Passion Projects leaving us. It’s such an extraordinary show; we’ve had such a great time with it and everyone who has come to see the show is so thankful and so happy.”

“BULLFIGHT!” by Picasso details his lifelong passion for the tradition, while “THE BIBLE” by Chagall is a portion of the 100 illustrations he was commissioned to print and publish from the Bible over the span of several decades. Erbach notes it is the first time the Peace Country has showcased work of this nature.

“It’s the first occasion we’ve done it, as a bit of a trial to engage what the response would be. These works are major loans from other museums across the country, which is another first for us… It’s difficult to see these pieces sometimes, especially when you live where we do. ”

The exhibition was made possible by a donation from the Sargent Family Endowment Fund and sponsorship by partners of the Destination Marketing Fund and the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association. It is free to access, like all exhibits at the gallery.

While visiting, Erbach also encourages people to view the Bleeding Borders exhibition by Toronto-based artist Amin Rehman, which looks at communities living along the borderlands of India and Pakistan, and Iran and Afghanistan.

“It’s a really, really moving show and it’s a really significant solo show for him, so that’s a show that’s also worth seeing a the same time.”

Bleeding Borders will be on display until March 20th.
