Helen E. Taylor music students make Canadian Music Class Challenge top 10 list

A group of music students at Helen E. Taylor School in Wembley are waiting to see if they are one of the lucky winners of this year’s CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge.

The grade five to seven students recently made the competition’s Elementary Instrumental top ten list for their rendition of Snowbird by Canadian Artist Anne Murray.

“We’re super excited, the kids are really excited; they know that it’s a big deal so they’re pretty excited,” says Music Teacher Rhonda Johnson. “We’re just a little small-town school that put this together.”

Overall, the students were up against 1,200 other music classes who signed up for a chance to win $3,000 in new instruments and a plaque.

Johnson says they started practising in September at lunch hours, after school and on days off and submitted their video to the competition back in November. She adds that she is so proud of all the work the students put in.

“There are many schools across Canada that have a music focus in their school and we actually lost our band program quite a few years ago and we’ve just slowly been building back our music program… I’m just really proud of all the work that they did and that they’re getting some recognition for that.”

Winners will be chosen by CBC Music on December 17th.
