Local group Mamas for Mamas receives more than $10K from GP100

One local group will be able to start a few new programs thanks to a donation from The GP100. At the group’s last meeting, they presented Mamas for Mamas in Grande Prairie with a cheque for more than $10,000.

Mamas for Mamas Executive Coordinator Jenny Hamilton says it’s amazing to get this money.

“We’re so grateful that we were given an opportunity to receive the funds. Everything we have accomplished to date has been 100 per cent volunteer with no money in the bank, so we’re just really excited to take things to the next level now.”

Launching in Grande Prairie in June 2019, Mamas for Mamas is currently online only and reaches most of its members through its Facebook page.

The goal is to connect moms with other moms and make them aware of the resources available to them in the city as well as give them a place to share items and services at no cost.

While a final total for the donation is not yet known, Hamilton says they already have big plans for the money.

“We’ve been talking to different landlords in the city and trying to bring our online community into the real world; a place where moms can come in and meet us and have coffee. We’re talking to a bunch of social workers about getting them on board for a few hours a week so that we can do a better job of intake.”

Hamilton is hoping to put some of those things into motion in the new year.

GP100 is a group of 100 men in the Grande Prairie area who meet four times a year to donate to local charities. The group was created in 2018 after the success of 100+ Women Who Care, who also meet to donate to a charity of their choice.

At 100+ Women Who Care’s recent meeting on November 19th, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grande Prairie & Area was the chosen charity.
