New partnership sees hundreds of area students receive daily breakfast

Pembina Pipeline Corporation and the Breakfast Club of Canada have entered into a five-year, $5 million partnership to support breakfast school programs across Canada, including 10 participating schools in Grande Prairie proper, and an additional four in the Grande Prairie region. Pembina Deep Basin District Manager Jodie Colbert says the hardships felt by families across the area are certainly stressful, and she hopes the program can make a tangible difference.

“I have two little kids of my own and I take them to daycare and they get breakfast there and it makes a big difference. The kids need good nutrition to be mentally and physically able to carry on their day so it’s nice to be able to do that.”

Breakfast Club of Canada Senior Advisor Ben Neumer says many residents in cities, including those in Grande Prairie, may not be aware of just how deep the problem of childhood hunger goes. He says they help feed nearly 500 children in the Peace Country every morning.

“We’re feeding students in all walks of life, urban communities, rural communities, fly-in communities. Food security is a major issue in Canada, and collectively we need to come together and find a solution.”

The announcement was made at St. Catherine’s Catholic School in Grande Prairie Wednesday, where students were given fruit smoothies as part of the kick-off to the multi-year agreement.
