RCMP warns drivers to slow down, put safety first on snowy roadways

Grande Prairie RCMP is urging all drivers to slow down and use safe driving techniques as another blast of early winter sweeps over the region.

“Slow down, give ourselves time to stop and slow down so we are avoiding collisions and driving safely out there,” says Constable Candace Hrdlicka.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the region, which includes upwards of 15 centimetres of snow expected throughout the Grande Prairie area on Friday.

Hrdlicka says with a lot of drivers yet to make to switch to winter tires, it could make things even more slippery out treacherous. She adds even if your vehicle is winter-ready, drivers shouldn’t let their concentration behind the wheel drop.

“Regardless of what type of vehicle you’re driving, and whether it’s a four-wheel-drive vehicle or not we still need to adjust our speed and driving, as there can often be ice underneath the surface of the snow.”
