Peace Country ASL Club to hold information session for upcoming classes

If you’ve ever been interested in learning sign language this may be your chance. The Peace Country American Sign Language Club in Grande Prairie will be hosting an information session on August 21st to show off what the club has to offer.

“Anybody that’s interested in learning sign language or looking for a hearing loss support group or any interest in memberships or classes [is encouraged] just to stop in. We’ll have all the information on when classes start, what a membership offers and the membership fees and registration fees,” says Board Member Casey George.

The club opened in March 2018 and has held one set of classes so far which saw around 25 to 30 participants. George says this is the only club of its kind in northern Alberta.

“There is only Edmonton through I do believe its Deaf Alberta and from what we’ve looked into it’s not reasonably priced plus you’d have to go to Edmonton for the weekend. There are no deaf supports, there was no hard of hearing supports or any resources available for the general public; It’s all done online through general correspondence or in Edmonton.”

Along with classes, the group is hoping to start up a hearing loss support group for those dealing with hearing loss or those who have a loved one dealing with it. George says more information on that will be released this Wednesday.

The session will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Room A at the Lion’s Learning Centre.
