Local boxer on her way to Esker All Female BoxCup this fall

A local boxer is on her way to represent Grande Prairie in Dublin, Ireland. This October, 15-year-old Damya Bow will be participating in the 2019 Esker All Female BoxCup. Damya said she’s been working hard to prepare.

“[I’ve been] training my butt off for four hours every day [it’s been] pretty crazy… [but] I’m super excited, I feel like I’m gonna do very well.”

Damya has been boxing since she was little and originally learned from her dad. She now and trains at Warrior Strong International and has done a lot in a short time.

Back in March, she won a gold medal at the provincials, became the first female provincial champion from Grande Prairie and was also named the best junior female boxer.

A month later she was also one of two local boxers to go to Nationals for the first time since 1984. Going into this competition she said it doesn’t really matter if she wins or loses.

“I’m really just hoping for a really good experience because I went to nationals and I lost but it was such an amazing experience and it made me realize that boxing really isn’t about winning it’s about the experience.”

Damya will be hosting a barbeque on August 18th at Stanley Boxing and Just Fitness on 112 Avenue from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in order to fundraise for her trip. The competition runs from October 11th to 13th.
