High Level wildfire evacuees able to return home Monday

High Level residents who were forced from their homes due to a wildfire nearly two weeks ago will be able to return home on Monday.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Town of High Level officials said, “At 10 a.m. Monday, the mandatory evacuation order for High Level, the surrounding areas of Mackenzie County and the Dene Tha’ First Nation communities of Bushe River, Meander River and Chateh will be lifted and people will be allowed back into their homes. An evacuation alert will be put in place immediately.”

Residents in High Level will re-enter the town from the east on Highway 58, and when they arrive they will be given a re-entry package with information to help them make the transition as smooth as possible.

Wildfire officials say the townsite remains relatively safe from the fire for the time being, however it could “change, if the weather changes.”

Officials are urging residents returning to have a full tank of gas in their vehicle, as well as a few days worth of supplies just in case.

Since the evacuation order was put into place, nearly 800 evacuees have been moved into hotels around the Grande Prairie region.
