City offering registration services to help track down stolen bikes

Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is offering peace of mind to residents who own bikes.

On May 25th, members of enforcement services are holding a Bicycle Registry Event at Ernie’s Sports Experts to take some photos and catalogue some information about your bicycle, which gives authorities a much easier path to return the bike to its rightful owner.

“Whether it’s turned in by somebody else, or it’s found abandoned, or what have you. Once they have that serial number and registered owner they are able to find out who it belongs to and get it turned back,” says Cheryl George with Enforcement Services.

Bicycle thefts remain a problem in Grande Prairie, with 18 reported thefts in April and 5 already in May. It is one the city hopes to get a grip on before it gets out of control.

“We know there are probably more than that which haven’t been reported. All you have to do is go on social media to see how much of a problem it is.”

If you can’t make it to Ernie’s on May 25th, registration will be available at the City of Grande Prairie website.
