Dave Barr Community Centre adds pickleball to drop-in schedule

The Dave Barr Community Centre in Grande Prairie has added indoor pickleball to its line up. From Monday to Friday, the community centre is offering a drop-in adult pickleball time from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Facilities Supervisor Cate Amaro says pickleball needed a venue in Grande Prairie and they wanted to help.

“We have seen the need of this space for pickleball players and because of this, we had a slot in our drop-in times… We put three hours together for all adults to just come and play pickleball.”

Pickleball is a paddle sport with a ball similar to a wiffle-type ball and is played in groups of two to four. The centre has created four courts with the ability to add two more if interest grows.

Since the program started on May 7th, Amaro says she has seen around 16 people a day hit the courts and that reviews have been positive.

“We get nothing but amazing comments that the courts are so good, the floor is great, the lighting is perfect, the acoustics are great. The pickleball players who have come already, they are so happy and it really makes us very happy to be hosting this sport now at Dave Barr.”

Dave Barr will also be offering lessons every Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The program costs $5 per drop in and will run until August 23rd.
