Downtown business concerned about fumes from weed spraying

A downtown business is concerned about the spraying of weeds in Germain Park.

The Downtown Association has received a complaint from Retro Relics worried that fumes were getting into their HVAC system, but Manager Helen Rice says they’re willing to take care of the park themselves.

“The City has an Adopt-a-Park agreement program. This particular business owner had said that they would be prepared to maintain the park – to keep the garbage picked up and to keep the weeds pulled out.”

Rice says they considered spraying only in the evening but the owner was still concerned.

Other options have also proved troublesome in the past.

“We’ve explored the use of powder, but the City had some concerns with the effectiveness of it. They have trouble with weed whacking because there does get rocks in there that have broken windows as far away as across the street in the past.”

The Association has asked the city to enter a three month agreement with the store that would be cancelled any time the upkeep is insufficient.
