UPDATE: Man dies after altercation on east side

UPDATE: Grande Prairie RCMP says a man died as a result of and altercation in the area of 100 Avenue and 92 Street. Authorities were called around 5 p.m. Saturday, and a man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 48-year-old victim passed away a short time later. His identity has not been released. An autopsy has been scheduled for February 20th in Edmonton.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and the community during this difficult time,” says Corporal Chris Warren.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody. The RCMP Major Crimes Unit North has taken over the investigation.

“The investigation is preliminary in nature and RCMP resources are expected to remain in the area for some time and the public is asked to avoid the area,” adds Warren.

Anyone who was in the area Saturday or who witnessed the altercation is asked to contact Grande Prairie RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Traffic on the east side of Grande Prairie is being detoured by an RCMP investigation. Police are currently on the scene at 100 Avenue and 92 Street.

Westbound and southbound lanes of traffic are affected. Drivers are asked to use another route or expect delays.

One man is in custody. No further information has been released so far.
