Grande Prairie sets snowfall record

A record amount of snow fell Friday in Grande Prairie. Environment Canada recorded 7.2 centimetres at the Grande Prairie Airport, unofficially besting the previous February 1st record of 5.1 centimetres set in 1974.

That translated into 6.8 millimetres of precipitation, which is another record. Previously, the most for February 1st was 4.3 millimetres in 1955.

Peace River saw a mix of snow and rain Friday, leading to two records broken. A total of 6.4 millimetres of rain fell, besting the 2001 record of 2 millimetres, and 15.4 millimetres of precipitation was recorded at the Peace River Airport, nearly doubling the previous record of 8.6 millimetres set in 1968.

Nine centimetres of snow fell in Peace River, which wasn’t enough to beat the 1968 record of 13.7 centimetres. Snowfall warnings in both regions have ended, but extreme cold warnings have been issued in their place.
