Site C dam foundation structure finished

A major part of the Site C dam is now done. Acciona says the foundation of the project on the Peace River in northeastern B.C. has been completed.

The structure is 70 metres high and is supposed to be solid enough to support the 1,100-megawatt hydroelectric power plant and spillways. The $1.75 billion contract also included permanent roads, a temporary access bridge, and drainage and debris handling facilities.

Peace River Hydro Partners also finished the foundations for the hydroelectric power house and the spillway apron in October. Acciona says it had a hard time dealing with extremely cold weather, meaning it could only lay concrete six months of the year.

The British Columbia government gave B.C. Hydro the go-ahead to finish construction of the hydroelectric dam in December 2017. The decision was made after an independent review found the project was behind its scheduled November 2024 completion, and the overall price tag would exceed $10 billion.
