Family First Centre opens in Rycroft

A new resource for rural communities north of Grande Prairie has opened up in Rycroft.

The Family First Centre at Rycroft School has information on everything from parenting to health services and activities in the area, along with a piano, treadmill, and video games.

Kaili Chernuka is a school and family liaison for Peace Wapiti School Division, and hopes the space will be well used by families and students from surrounding towns.

“So it’s kind of just a Jack of all trades space, and really anything that would benefit the community, or especially if it’s educational friendly, and especially if it’s community building, then that’s the space for that to happen.”

The need was seen by a group of school staff and community members that found a lack of resources available for families.

They were able to raise much of the funds needed through a garage sale in June.

The centre will be open during school days from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Chernuka stresses that it’s not just for Rycroft residents, but neighbouring communities as well.
