Stompede action set to roll into town

Five days of Stompede action is set to begin.

The 2018 Stompede kicks off Tuesday night with the annual parade. It will begin near Hillside School and travel to Muskoseepi Park.

On Wednesday the wagons will start to roll. They go all five days of the Stompede and begin at 5:00 p.m. Other rodeo events will run during the daytime including bull riding, saddle bronc, barrel racing and more.

New additions this year include an Arts and Culture Expo and transit partnership with the city.

The expo will be a space for artists and artisans to showcase their work. An open call was put out early this year for pieces that fit the theme “Sutherland Way” in honour of local longtime chuckwagon driver, Kelly Sutherland.

15 pieces of work will be on display in Clarkson Hall. The public will be invited to vote on the works on Friday from 3:30 to 11 p.m. The grand prize winner will be announced Sunday and will receive $2,000.

Getting to and from Stompede will be easier than ever before. The city will be offering a park and ride shuttle option from Towne Centre Mall to Evergreen Park. It will run each day of Stompede until 9:30 p.m. The city says a bus will also depart Evergreen Park at 10:15 after the final chuckwagon race.

The 41st annual Stompede will run May 30 until June 3, 2018 at Evergreen Park. Along with the chuckwagon events there will also be a midway and other entertainment.
