Crossroads awarded trauma training grant

Staff at the Crossroads Resource Centre and Women’s Shelter in Fairview are in line for better training thanks to a grant from the province. The Ministry of Status of Women has awarded them $9,000 to better support women and children fleeing violent situations.

“The Status of Women grant is a valuable contribution to our continued work to provide the best possible services to our clients,” says Crossroads executive director Wendy Biegel. “This training will prepare our staff with new knowledge and skills to better understand and help the women we serve.”

The training will teach the front-line workers about the various reactions people have to trauma, and how it can be linked to illness, addictions, and chronic disease. It will be carried out in Fairview by University of Lethbridge instructor Dawn McBride.

The province says seven out of 10 Albertans know a woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse. Indigenous women are also three times more likely to report experiencing violence than non-Indigenous women.
