Union granted injunction blocking Suncor random drug tests

The Court of Queen’s Bench in Alberta has issued an injunction against Suncor, ordering it to stop randomly drug testing employees. After the court of appeals upheld a decision to allow the company to continue the practice, Unifor 707A filed for the injunction.

“Unifor maintains that random testing is invasive and degrading,” says Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “The policy that Suncor is trying to implement is a gross violation of worker’s rights.”

The union represents 3,000 of Suncor’s workers, and has opposed to policy since it was brought in in 2012. The tests won’t be allowed until there is a final arbitration decision on Unifor’s grievance from that year.

CBC News reports Suncor plans to file an immediate appeal. The judge that made the order says employees who don’t have drug or alcohol problems and haven’t been involved in a workplace incident would be impacted.
