PACE champions “I Believe You” campaign

PACE wants to make sure that survivors of sexual assault know they are not alone. Their public educators will be at Grande Prairie Regional College all week with a graffiti wall and everyone is invited to add their tag.

The wall is part of the I Believe You campaign. PACE’s Public Health Educator Danay Bjornson says the wall is meant to encourage people to be supportive if someone confides in them.

“Often when people disclose that they have experienced sexual assault or abuse then people often won’t belive them. Or [they] will say well that peson wouldn’t do that or how much were you drinking?”

Bjornson says that crimes in general have a false reporting rate of 4 per cent, and sexual assault is even less but there are many reasons people don’t come forward.

“Lots of times they know the person so that’s a huge barrier. And the not being believed, huge barrier. And also feeling like it’s their fault.”

PACE has a variety of support and counselling programs available. If you would like to sign the graffiti wall they will be at GPRC all this week.
