City to review proposed urban hens bylaw

A city committee will be looking at letting people raise hens in their back yard. At Monday’s meeting, the Grande Prairie Urban Hens group gave city council a bylaw they’d drafted up.

It includes a permit process that would allow residents to keep up to four hens, as long as their neighbours are okay with it and they take a mandatory education course. Roosters wouldn’t be allowed, and eggs, meat or manure couldn’t be sold.

The Urban Hens group has spent the past couple of months drumming up support and saw more than 100 people at an open house last week. City staff will go over the proposed bylaw and write a report for a future Community Safety Committee meeting.
