Stop Hunger Now looking for more volunteers this year

A meal packaging event will be put on next weekend to help feed families around the world that suffer from chronic hunger. The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie teams up with Stop Hunger Now every year for the event. President of the Grande Prairie Rotary Club Cheryl Montgomery says this year they are expanding to package 285,000 meals this year compared to around 212,000 they did last year.

“Last year we had 600 volunteers and this year we need 800. We have added an extra shift of 200 people, an evening shift. We are looking for the youth of the community to get involved but it isn’t just for the youth.”

Montgomery invites teams and businesses to participate as well.

“We’ve got banks challenging other banks. We have the friendly competition going out there and it adds a little fun to it. Everyone wears their swag and promotes their little organization.”

The club has covered the cost of the food that will be sent at $115,000. Volunteers will be set up in an assembly line to fill up each bag. It will consist of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix that includes 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

The event goes at the D-Coy Armouries on Saturday February 25th. Registration is needed before the event.
