Extreme cold warning issued for Grande Prairie

An extreme cold warning has been issued for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview and Peace River – Fairview – High Prairie – Manning regions. An extreme wind chill of minus 40 is expected in Grande Prairie overnight.

Wind chills of minus 35 to 45 are already being reported in the area tonight. Things should warm up during the day Monday but will get close to minus 40 again Monday night.

Hypothermia and frost bite are worries in this type of weather and it is recommended to dress appropriately. Wear layers and fabrics that keep you dry. Warm socks, gloves and a hat are recommended, as well as covering your nose. If you get wet, change into dry clothes as soon as possible.

Babies, the elderly, people working outside, and homeless are some of many that could be at risk of getting hypothermia or frost bite, if they are not dressed warmly. Environment Canada also recommends protecting pets from the cold by limiting their time outside.
