A Peace Country MLA will sit on a new panel that will look at improving the way the province handles neglected children. Peace River MLA Debbie Jabobour will chair the 13-member Ministerial Panel on Child Intervention.
In addition to six representatives from the NDP, the group also includes the current leaders of the PC, Liberal, and Alberta Parties, and a Wildrose MLA. They’re joined by three experts on child intervention and Indigenous issues.
The panel has been tasked with overhauling Alberta’s broken child welfare system, brought on by the case of Serenity. The four year old girl was in government care when she died in 2014. It took two years for the RCMP to be notified.
Work starts February 1st and some changes could come as early as this spring.
