The city is working with the Alberta Association for Community Living in hopes of creating some employment opportunities for adults in the community who are living with developmental disabilities.
About 70% of those adults are currently unemployed.
Association CEO Bruce Uditsky is hoping the city will set an example for other municipalities in the province to follow suit.
He says these partnerships often turn out to be very beneficial for both the employer and the employee.
“We want people to have a sense of belonging in their community, to have a reason, like most of us, to get up in the morning. Many businesses tell us how in fact their bottom line and work place environment changes as a result of accommodating someone with some differences.”
The community living department is the first area of the city to begin collaborating with the association.
The two will be working closely together to find positions that would be a good fit for someone with developmental disabilities, while also benefiting the city.
