Best Bar None program continues to grow in Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie was the third city in the province to introduce the Best Bar None Program to the community and it continues to grow every year. There are 9 locally owned bars and pubs accredited through the program this year compared to 6 businesses last year.

The program works with bars and lounges across the province to encourage a higher standard of customer service and safety. Coordinator David Young explains that program is voluntary and each establishment is given a checklist of over 100 best practices to follow.

“Every community where the program arrives, one of the first things we notice is the business community and bar operators coming together with their regulators in a really collaborate relationship.”

The program is run by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission in collaboration with GP Crime Prevention and other community members like the RCMP and Enforcement Services.

This year the Best Bar award was given to Better Than Fred’s for the second year in a row. Bar Manager Carl Krause says it feels good to receive the nod again.

“It is unexpected but feels good. I like that [the program] pulls everybody together. It makes people feel safe and cozy at our spot. It is really nice to know everyone is doing this to keep it cool and calm in the community.”

The first year the program was initiated the award was given to Maddhatter’s Liquid Lounge.

Mr. Mikes Casual Steakhouse was accredited for the first time this year and went on to win the Best Restaurant and Pub award. Operations Manager Lance Prestone explains that their business is going to make an effort to get others involved.

“We want to call out the Keg Steakhouse and Bars and Moxies to get involved in it. They are our direct competition and we always compare ourselves to them.”

Howlers was also part of the program for the first time and took home the Best Campus Bar award. The Best Casino Bar award went to the Great Northern Casino for the second year in a row. Other businesses that received the accreditation include Maddhatters Liquid Lounge, The Den Pub and Carvery, the Crown and Anchor, Diamonds Gentlemen’s Club, and Red Rock Urban BBQ.
