Tax sale has less properties up for auction

There are around 19 properties being put up for auction this November for owing in municipal taxes.

Notifications are sent out to business or home owners that let them know they owe money to the city of Grande Prairie and if they do not pay, the public will be allowed to bid on the property at an upcoming auction.

The bidding will begin at the market value to make sure owners are not under-sold.

Councillor Lorne Radbourne explains that this auction held every year is to provide an incentive for people to pay their taxes because if they don’t, they may lose their home or building.

“The threat of losing their property works. In fact, very few end up going to auction.”

Homeowners do have up until the day of the sale to pay their overdue taxes and remove their home from the auction block.

Last year in August, the list of properties set for sale was over 30.

This year’s auction is held November 25th, 2016 in the First Floor North Conference Room at City Hall at 9:00 am.
