Public School District hires McDonald as Superintendent and CEO

Although they embarked on a cross-country search, the Grande Prairie Public School District didn’t have to look very far to find its next Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer. The board has selected Alexander (Sandy McDonald), who has been Acting Superintendent since January. Chair John Lehners says he stands out as a great communicator.

“He’s got a great vision for where he wants to go and I think if people want to talk to him and have feedback I think he’s a great person for that so I think people should feel comfortable talking to him and sharing their ideas helping us move forward.”

When looking for a replacement for former Superintendent Carol Ann MacDonald, Lehners said they wanted someone “with strong leadership skills and a background in curriculum that can implement changes.” He adds that McDonald stood out, especially due to his experience and critical support from staff.

Prior to the interim position, McDonald was the Deputy Superintendent. He also has more than 25 years of experience as a teacher, principal, Director of Educational Technology and Assistant Superintendent. He’s on a four year contract that starts June 1st.
