Former Sexsmith mounties receive commendation awards

Three RCMP officers have been commended for their role in capturing an escaped convict near Sexsmith five years ago. Back on March 19th, 2011 Constables Clifford Leavitt, Adam Palmer and Douglas Philip set up a road block to try to catch the heavily armed fugitive.

A two-hour standoff ended when the suspect drove at the mounties, firing non-stop. They returned fire and eventually hurt the convict, who was then arrested and returned to prison where he is serving a lengthy sentence.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson argues the men risked their lives in the line of duty, and fortunately only one of the suffered a minor injury. All three are now posted in other Alberta detachments, with Constable Leavitt now posted in Spirit River.

They were recognized Wednesday at K Division Headquarters in Edmonton.
