Notley looking for infrastructure funds from federal budget

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to announce his first budget as Prime Minister tomorrow and Premier Rachel Notley is hoping to receive some of the infrastructure investments that are slated to be announced.

Notley says the province is looking for at least $1 billion in the budget. Infrastructure investment is part of the Canadian government’s plan to help with economic growth but bigger investments won’t come until later as the initial plans for the Liberals is to focus on maintenance and repair work.

Along with infrastructure spending, the federal government says it plans to invest in an enhanced child-benefit plan. Meanwhile, Notley says she would like to see changes in employment insurance for laid off workers. Alberta has seen the unemployment rate climb from 4.8 per cent last year to around 7 per cent and is being blamed on the downturn in oil prices the province has been experiencing.
