Federal fund cancellation could hurt local Afghanistan memorial proposal

A proposal for a local Afghanistan memorial may be in trouble. The federal government recently cancelled the Community Memorial Fund, a decision Grande Prairie – Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin is fighting.

“We really have no clarity as to why the Liberals are doing this. It seems like such a horrific thing to do – a real slap in the face to all those people who have been diligently working to raise funds in local communities to pay respects to those who sacrificed their lives and who fought in Afghanistan.

He adds that it’s believed there were still funds in the account.

Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Units member Renee Charbonneau has been working to get a memorial built in Veterans’s Park. She was supposed to apply to Veterans Affairs next month in order to raise the estimated $30,000 she’ll need.
