Derby team on the look out for “Fresh Meat” for the season

The Grande Prairie Roller Derby team is looking for “Fresh Meat” for their Rage and Fire team’s 2016 season. Their skate sessions began on Monday in Wembley with only a few returning experienced players this year.

TNTina from the Grande Prairie Roller Derby Association says it doesn’t matter what walk of life you come from, you are able to participate in the game.

“The faster girls are your jammers but the times are changing with the way the play is changing. You will find “well-built” girls are taking on the jamming because they are getting stronger and have that extra power to push through.”

She explains that they have had all types of professions join together to be a team such as teachers, moms and health inspectors. She adds that anyone can join in and they teach you how skate as well as stop so you do not injure yourself.

“Come out have a look. We have a lot of loaner gear and stuff. We will suit you up with skates, some knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet and once you start hitting girls… you will require a mouth guard.”

Whether you are a new or experienced roller skater, there is a spot for you on the Roller Derby team. The team meets at 6:30 on Monday nights for skates at the multi-use room at the Wembley Arena.
