Grovedale-born Carter Kettyle scores first CFL TD during brothers wedding

Peace Region football player has scored his first career CFL touchdown, at the same time his brother was getting married.

Carter Kettyle plays as a wide receiver, and was drafted by his hometown team, the Edmonton Elks back in the spring.

So far in his rookie season, he has been playing a consistent number of special team snaps, Kettyle says so far this season has been a dream come true.

“It’s pretty surreal, you know, like it’s something that you dream of ever since you were a little kid.”

Kettyle added that so far his time in the CFL has been a bit of adjusting to the speed of the game.

“Definitely been an adjustment for sure, continuing to learn and grow within that. The speed of the game is obviously different.”

“It’s pretty crazy, you know you get to play with players that you watched growing up, and play for a team I watched growing up.”

So far into the season, the Elks have a 6-3 record. Kettyle mentioned that he can feel the love and support for both him and the team across the entire province.

“I fell the personal support, but also the team support from Grande Prairie, Edmonton and from all of those little cities around, it’s really special.”

On Saturday, August 8, the Elks headed out east to play the Montreal Alouettes.

Towards the end of the 4th quarter, Kettyle caught his first career reception, and minutes later Kettyle caught his first career touchdown. At the time of the touchdown, the game was likely out of reach for a comeback, but Kettyle says the moment was still special regardless.

“I’m pretty competitive, which i think has gotten me to where I’m at. But, definitely not the situation that you want to be in.”

“All and all, still a pretty special moment, one that I’ll remember forever.”

The day of the game also happened to be Kettyle’s brothers wedding. Because of the wedding, many did were not watching the game at the time of the touchdown.

After every game, Kettyle facetimes his mother while he’s on the field. She asked how the game went, he told her that they lost, she followed up by asking how he did.

“I told her that I scored, and she kind of in shock, and then everyone kind of jumped into the facetime and we’re all really proud and excited and yelling.”

Both Kettyle and his family believe that the time he caught the touchdown, his brother was signing his papers.

“They think that they were signing the papers about the same time I scored the touchdown, which I thought is pretty cool.”

“I am very happy for them, and they are very happy for me.”

Kettyle was born in Grovedale, and played high school football at St. Joseph High School before playing at the University of Alberta.
