NWP advises community of mass casualty training exercise on Tuesday

Northwestern Polytechnic is advising the community of a scheduled mass casualty training exercise taking place between the school and the hospital.

On Tuesday, April 28 a training exercise will be taking place at NWP’s main campus parking lot, with ground transportation to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

Some of the exercise will be taking place at the helicopter pad southwest of the hospital.

Officials say that the training will feature more than 100 participants ranging from student’s to industry professionals.

“Multi-agency collaboration is critical to improving outcomes in high-stakes emergencies. This exercise gives our students and future colleagues the opportunity to strengthen coordination, decision-making, and communication in real-world conditions,” said Dr. Vanessa Sheane, President and CEO of NWP. “We appreciate the public’s support as we work together to build a safer, more resilient community.”

The goal of the training-exercise is to allow the students to practise and sharpen their skills in a safe and controlled setting, with local first responders.

NWP added that if you see emergency vehicles, STARS Air Ambulance operations, and first responders actively engaged in realistic operations, that this is a training scenario.

During the training event, residents may hear loud noises, see simulated casualties, and witness emergency responders conducting mock rescues, evacuations, and patient transportation.

The event will last from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
