Northwestern Polytechnic is looking for local businesses to pair up with students to help advance their learning.
On April 9, NWP and the Grande Prairie and District Chambers of Commerce hosted a competition, allowing students to pitch business ideas to local companies.
The A Big Deal competition was inspired by the TV show Shark Tank. Students had the opportunity to present to a real audience, and receive feed back from local business leaders. The student-led presentations were rated based on clarity of idea, market opportunity, revenue potential, feasibility, competitive advantage, and overall impression.
The students presented the ideas to a panel of judges, with the winning presentation being made by student Tyson Black.
Black won the grand prize of a meteoric leadership consulting package, which was valued at nearly $1,500. The runner-up was Elaura Detoyato, who received a one-hour flight for two over the city from Adventure Aviation. With third place going to Ashley Parlee. The top three each received a one-hour consultation from various local businesses.
“This partnership reflects exactly what the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce strives to create, meaningful connections that strengthen our business community and drive regional growth,” said Wendy Thomas, CEO of the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce. “By bringing together the innovation and energy of Northwestern Polytechnic students with the experience and leadership of our members, we are supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs and building a strong future workforce.”
NWP added that they are seeking interest from other chamber members who would like to work with students during the upcoming fall and winter semesters. This will allow businesses to have supports such as student-led support, strategic marketing plans, research and analysis, operational efficiency reviews, and logistics planning.
