ASIRT has cleared a Grande Prairie police officer of any wrong-doing following a officer involved shooting last year.
At around 1:30 p.m. November 10th, 2025. Police received a domestic call for service, and after locating what they believe to be a related vehicle, they attempted to pull the vehicle over, to which it reportedly fled.
Police used their emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the suspect, the suspect allegedly did not comply, and continued to flee.
Officers stayed engaged in a pursuit, which ended with the vehicle rolling over, landing on its roof.
When Mounties approached the vehicle, the airbags were deployed, an officer then began to cut into the airbags to check on the passengers. While attempting to cut the airbags, the officer saw a barrel of a gun and yelled “gun, gun, gun.”
Two officers grabbed two children from the rear area of the vehicle and removed them, and once the children were removed, the suspect allegedly discharged a shotgun out of a vehicle, to which an officer returned fire and shot into the vehicle five times.
The suspect then surrendered, and suffered a gunshot wound to their shoulder.
A third child was then removed from the vehicle, police say all three children did not suffer any injuries from the rollover.
ASIRT says as a result of the investigation, the officer who discharged his weapon was lawfully placed and acting properly in the execution of his duties. ASIRT added that there is no evidence to support any belief that he engaged in any unlawful or unreasonable conduct that would give rise to an offence.
