RCMP is encouraging drivers to plan ahead of Super Bowl weekend

With many eyes expected to be watching Super Bowl 60 on Sunday, the RCMP is urging the community not to drive under the influence.

Officer Matt Howell said if you plan on going out for the big game, ensure you have a reliable safe ride home or an alternative sleeping option.

“If you’re not sure if you are going to drink or not, and then you decide that you are going to drink, make sure you have someone that you can call. Wherever you are going, see if there is logic there, whether that be crashing on someone’s couch or seeing if there is a hotel next-door and rent a room for the night,” he said.

Howell mentioned a recent situation in which an individual was charged with impaired driving causing death, and said if you’re driving under the influence with others in the vehicle, you could be at fault.

“Some people think that drinking and driving that you’re only affecting the people the people on the road, or yourself. But, in this case, this person was driving under the influence and the people that he was driving died. He was still adeemed responsible of their deaths.”

“If you crash and you kill someone within your car, you can be charged with criminal negligence,” he added.

Howell is encouraging the community to plan ahead this weekend. He said, “Planning is the best prevention.”
