The Kitt family has been named the County of Grande Prairie’s Farm Family of the Year.
Jerry, Donovan and Lisa Kitt are the owners of First Nature Farms and The Homestead Farm, located in Goodfare. The family’s farm was chosen for the 2026 Farm Family Award, which recognises outstanding agricultural contributions in the region.
Jerry Kitt and four business partners purchased the land in 1980. Over the years Jerry became the sole operator and committed to organic farming before it was widely accepted.
“I wasn’t a farmer when we bought the place. But I became absorbed in the land and the cattle and everything this farm had to offer,” Jerry said.
In 2015, Jerry’s son Donovan and daughter-in-law Lisa returned to the county and bought their own homestead. As the business grew, the scale and long-term vision of The Homestead aligned closely with that of his father’s farm. The couple moved, built a house near Jerry’s, and the two farms operated on the same land.
As of 2026 the family farms roughly 3,000 acres of deeded and leased land. They currently raise grass-fed beef cattle, pastured pigs, laying hens and broiler chickens, and grow vegetables, garlic and microgreens. Everything they produce is certified organic and is sold directly to homes through local markets, subscriptions and farm-to-table events. Their pigs are sold in markets in Vancouver, Kelowna and Nelson, B.C.
The Kitts will be honoured with the 2026 Farm Family Award during the Peace Country Classic Agri-Show at Evergreen Park on March 13, 2026.
