Endurance key in Grande Prairie roller derby home opener

Despite falling to the Edmonton E-Ville 257 to 112 at home Saturday night, the Grande Prairie Rage N Fyre are taking away a lot of positives from the game.

Assistant Captain Twisted C-Star says their play improved in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to catch up.

“It was tough; they were hitting hard! I think they’ve been training pretty hard in their endurance, so I think that’s where they beat us. We are headed to Flat Track Fever for a tournament next, so we’ve got lots of stuff we’ve got to work on; I think our endurance mostly.”

The roller derby squad was coming off of just two months of practice and only one tournament so far, and were able to put up a good fight.

E-Ville’s D.Mented, and the Rage’s Yuck Fou earned MVP honours at Sexsmith Arena.

Twisted C-Star adds that they’re seeing more and more people come out to cheer them on.

“It’s our third year now, so people are starting to know what we’re doing and know when to cheer and know when things are happening in a good sense. It’s exciting to have a fan base that actually follows all of us.”

A rookie bout was held before the main event for derby girls with less than 10 games experience.

Team White beat Team Black 126 to 84.
