County of Grande Prairie encouraging road safety after driver stopped for driving double the speed limit

The County of Grande Prairie is encouraging drivers to be safe on the highways, following a traffic stop that saw a driver allegedly travelling more than two times the posted limit.

According to the county, a Peace Officer conducted a traffic stop due to a driver travelling at 123 kilometres per hour in a 60 kilometres per hour zone.

“This incident is part of a troubling rise in high-speed violations,” the county says.

This traffic stop comes just two months after a local Peace Officer conducted a similar stop for a driver going more than two-and-a-half times the posted speed limit. During that incident, the Peace Officer determined the driver was driving 211 kilometres per hour in an 80 kilometre per hour zone, which led to a mandatory court appearance for the driver.

As a result, the county is encouraging residents to take care on the roads, especially as snow begins to fall, and ice poses more of a risk.

Residents are asked to always follow the posted speed limit while adjusting speed based on conditions, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and reducing speed entirely when driving in snowy or icy conditions.
