Northwestern Alberta Association works with Yellowknife Community Association to support NWT evacuees

In collaboration with Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership, the Northwestern Alberta Foundation is accepting monetary donations for Northwest Territories evacuees. According to the organizations, this partnership will help those who want to support those impacted by the wildfires.

CEO for the community foundation, Laura LeValley, explains that the donation link was used in May when communities in northwestern Alberta were forced to leave their home due to fires in the area and now, it is being used to help those from the NWT.

“What we are doing for the [Northwest Territories] is really just extending that link so if people in our area would like to support their communities, they can do so through that same link.”

LaValley explains that when someone donates, they can indicate what community they would like to support, and those funds can then be directed to where they are needed. The local community association is working with the Yellowknife Community Association to ensure the funding gets to these communities.

“We know that they are best equipped to address the specific needs in their region,” LeValley says. “I did speak with my colleague at the Yellowknife Community Foundation, and they just said there was a lot of chaos going on in their community, as we can well imagine and relate to.”

She adds that when it was the local community in need, the community came out and “very generously” showed their support, which the organization hopes will continue for our northern neighbours.
