A disk golf tournament at the beginning of September will raise awareness about the Alberta Winter Games happening in Grande Prairie next February. Alberta Winter Games Manager Lisa Kirkoff says there is room for 72 teams of four to register for the one-disk tournament on September 8th.
“You don’t need any equipment, no prior experience necessary; in fact, we are encouraging people who have maybe never played to come out, see the course, and try something new.”
When Grande Prairie hosts the 2024 Alberta Winter Games, they expect roughly 2,400 athletes and coaches from across the province to compete in 18 different sports. Kirkoff explains the event will be a significant investment.
“As the host city, we are responsible for feeding them, transporting them, and running the sports schedules,” Kirkoff says.
She says funds raised from the tournament will go to the Alberta Winter Games general fund, with food and transportation being the two main things needing funding.
The tournament will have three shotgun starts at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. at the South Bear Creek disc golf course. Anyone looking for more information can find it on the Alberta Winter Games website.
