Former Grande Prairie mayor Dwight Logan passes away

Flags at city facilities across Grande Prairie will be at half mast in honour of former mayor and city councillor Dwight Logan, who passed away on July 29th.

Logan was first elected in 1982 and served on city council for 18 years, including three terms as mayor. He chose not to run for reelection in 2017, saying at the time that he stayed for as long as he did because he felt like he was making a difference.

Before his time in politics, Logan was a teacher who started his career at a junior high school in the city, teaching English and history. He then spent several years as a Cuso International volunteer, again teaching English and history in Malawi and Zambia.

He served on several community groups throughout the years, including the 1995 Host Society for the Canada Winter Games, GP Airport Commission, and the John Howard Society. He was also a founding member of the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta in 1995, now named the Northwestern Alberta Foundation.

On Wednesday afternoon Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton issued a statement sharing council’s condolences to Logan’s family, adding his “civic commitment left a lasting legacy in Grande Prairie.”

“From his time as an educator to his vast volunteer roles at organizations like the United Way and Downtown Association to his 18 years as a city councillor, Grande Prairie was made brighter and stronger because of Mr. Logan,” Clayton says. “City council is grateful and proud of the many contributions Mr. Logan made to our community during his tenure.”

As per his final wishes, there will not be a funeral service.
