Grande Prairie – Mackenzie riding boundary to change

Changes are coming to the Grande Prairie – Mackenzie and Peace River – Westlock ridings. Earlier in July, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission shared it had concluded the redrawings of the province’s electoral map.

In the final report, the riding which currently is Grande Prairie – Mackenzie would see a name change to just being Grande Prairie and a decrease in size. The Grande Prairie riding would start north of Grande Cache and end South of Rainbow Lake and High Level, with the same horizontal boundaries.

With the new map, Rainbow Lake, High Level, and everything north that used to be part of Grande Prairie – Mackenzie would become part of the Peace River – Westlock riding.

It’s reported the Chief Electoral Officer will use the boundaries described in the report submitted by the commission to draft the Representation Order, which “should become official in September 2023.”

The independent commission was established in 2021 to set the boundaries so each electoral district’s population was roughly the same. Factors such as historical patterns, geographic size, and identity were also said to be taken into account.
